"El hijo del otro" trata sobre la historia de Joseph y Yacine, dos chicos que al nacer fueron intercambiados por error en el hospital. Cuando por una prueba de sangre Joseph descubre que sus padres biológicos son otras personas, decide con su familia ir conocerlos. En este momento, Joseph, que es judío, se da cuenta que tiene origen islámico y Yacine, que es islámico, que tiene origen judio. En un principio, la situación es muy tensa: ambas madres aceptan rápidamente la situación mientras que a los padres les cuesta comprender a sus hijos. Aún así, acaban por dejar las religiones a un lado y ponen por delante los lazos que les unen.
La película se basa en el conflicto entre las dos religiones y como estos dos chicos tienen que aprender a aceptar a la otra familia tal y como es y no por sus creencias. Hay que aprender a ser tolerante, porque no siempre hay una respuesta correcta para todo, solo diferentes caminos con la misma meta y por ello tenemos que aceptar las ideas del resto.
